Description
Set in a mystical age of magic, monsters, and unlikely heroes on incredible journeys, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ will cast its spell over your entire family!
Director Ralph Bakshi’s colourful 1978 animated adaptation uses a blend of conventional drawing and rotoscoped (traced) movements from live-action footage, which succeeds in lending some depth and a sense of otherworldliness to the Black Riders and hordes of Orcs. Frodo’s encounter at the Ford of Rivendell, for example, is one of the movie’s best scenes thanks to this mixture of animation techniques. Backdrops are detailed and well-conceived, and all the main characters are strongly drawn. Among a good cast, John Hurt (Aragorn) and C3PO himself, Anthony Daniels (Legolas), provide sterling voice characterisation, while Peter Woodthorpe gives what is surely the definitive Gollum (he revived his portrayal three years later for the BBC’s exhaustive 13-hour radio dramatisation). Covering the first two books of Tolkien’s renowned ‘Lord of The Rings Trilogy’ this acclaimed animated adaptation succeeds in providing a somewhat gentler path for introducing the wonders of Middle Earth to a younger generation…
